| Jump to English 便秘に速効で効くシリアム・ハスクス (オオバコの種子殻粉）が以外なところで命を救う パート１  皆さま、こんにちは。CFTの水口です。 春うららかな季節、皆さんのペットさんたちもお散歩、鳥の観察と一層忙しく毎日を楽しんでいらっしゃるかと思います。 当セクション「Paws Did It Again / またやっちゃったのね」では、ペットの健康生活やピンチにどう対処していくか、または未然にどう防ぐかを獣医さんに伺いながらご紹介していきたいと思います。 まずは以下のリストをご覧ください。 以下の緊急事態は家で対処すると危険な場合があります。即、主治医さんにご連絡を取り、指示を仰ぐか、救急病院に連れて行く必要があります。 ＜種により異なる緊急事態＞ ＊ 犬 ー 突然腹部が膨れている ＊ 雄ネコ ー 排尿しようとしていきんでいるが出来ない ＊ うさぎ ー ２４時間食べていない ＜一般的な緊急例＞ ＊ 過剰な出血 ＊ 毒物の摂取 ＊ 呼吸をしづらくしている ＊ 交通事故または窓から落ちるなどの事故 ＊ 突然倒れる ＊ 発作・痙攣 ＊ 出産困難 （資料提供：シンフォニー・ベテリナリー・センター） このような緊急事態に素早く対処するため、日頃から目につくところに主治医さんの緊急番号を備え、 いざというときの輸送手段などを確認しておきましょう。 さて、本題に入ります。我が家には恐ろしく食べ癖の悪い猫がおります。名はプランキー。 プランキーは生まれておよそ５ヶ月にも満たない頃、私が住むアパートの裏に出没しておりました。野良猫のようでした。頭が大きく身体は非常に小さく、おたまじゃくしのよう。突然蛙になったりはしなさそうでしたが、首輪などはつけておらず、いつもひとりでお腹をすかせているようでした。秋の風が本格的に冷たくなった頃、いつもようにご飯をあげると、振り返りながらも去って行きました。でも、どういうわけかまた戻ってきたのです。私が持っていたお水をぺろりと嘗めると、私のあぐらのまんなかに座りました。  あまりのかわいさにその大きな頭にチュっとしてしまったのですね。で、この瞬間プランキーが私を完全に信用した。。のかどうかわかりませんが。。。思い切って、だっこしてみました。「みゃーう」と言ったものの嫌がりませんでしたので、そのまま家まで連れて行きました。当時家には猫一匹、犬一頭と家人がおりましたが、問題なく家族となりました。しかし、これがすべてのはじまりでした。プランキーには私をここまで（厳しく？）育ててくれた恩に心から感謝するばかり・・・。（先住動物がいるお家に外猫ちゃんを入れるときは、感染症の結果が出るまでしばらく隔離です。うちはまっすぐバスルームへ。チュっなんて本当はダメなんでした。） さて、その後プランキーは次から次へと困った事を巻き起こましたが、幸い先住犬猫の主治医の先生が天才的に問題を解決していくのです。レベッカ・キャンベル先生です。  こちらはキャンベル先生のお写真です。綺麗なだけでなく、深い情があり、才女なのです。学校はハーバード、タフツ、ペンシルバニア大学と博士号を取るまでどんどん突き進んで行き、とうとう獣医になって開業しました。キャンベル先生のすごいところは、私の下手な英語でもちゃんとメールでの質問に根気よく答えてくれるのです。また、的確な判断とユーモアが気持ちをほぐしてくれます。先生のところへ知人がうさぎを連れて行ったときに、ウサちゃんへの接し方がとても優しく、そのウサちゃんも珍しくおののかなかったという話を聞いて、うちも早速、先生の診療所（シンフォニー・ベテリナリー・センター）を訪ねました。まずは、先住猫１１才、名はネスタを連れて行きました。 ネスタはそれまで大変な病気にかかっていました。５年前のことです。 それまでは糖尿病により半年以上続いたインシュリン注射を日に２回。肝臓と腎臓の機能低下、ひどい 便秘、高甲状腺機能障害、そしてガン細胞。これでもかという感じですね。 今ではこれら全部が収まっており、１６才のネスタ猫は、元気に遊び、寝て、よく食べています。 食事やサプリや薬も含めて、ここまで来たのですが、今回はネスタの便秘をミラクルに治したシリアム・ハスクス (Psyllium Husks) についてご紹介します。  そしてこのシリアム・ハスクスはプランキーの命を助けることにもなりました。はじめてキャンベル先生のところにネスタを連れて行くと、まずネスタが半年以上も摂取されていた便秘薬が化学合成薬品なのでやめましょう、ということになりました。肝臓がすでによくないので、自然なものに切り替えるというのです。 カボチャをつぶしたのを与えてもよいけれど、糖分が心配なので、シリアム・ハスクスというファイバーにしましょう、とのこと。  しり？聞いた事のない名前ですね。 オオバコの種子殻を粉にしたものです。 普通の健康食品店で売っているそうです。 右はうちで使っているシリアム・ハスクスです。 日本では「スムースムーブ・ファイバー」または「オオバコ 種子殻パウダー」という名前で検索出来ました。 アメリカではご高齢の方がよく使うのだそうです。 １００％オオバコ種子殻ファイバーです。 １４ドル９９セント+税で買っています。 テーブルスプーンで６８個分の量ですから、 ネスタに毎日小さじ弱一回を使って、４ヶ月強持ちます。 便秘は糖尿病や他の内蔵疾患に大敵ですね。便秘にはいろいろ 原因があるかと思います。ネスタのように高齢や内蔵疾患で腸 が弱っている場合、ドライフードを食べたあとにお水を飲ま ないなど、水分が足りていない場合（首の後ろを上へ引っ張ってみてください。即座に皮膚が戻らなければ水分不足です）、または腸そのものの病気、事故や神経損傷が原因など（これらの場合は獣医さんの指示を仰ぎましょう）があります。 もしペットちゃんが便秘に苦しんでいたら、まずはウエットフードにお湯を加えるだけでも改善される可能性があります。（雄猫の場合はドライフードを主にあげると、雌よりも尿管が狭いのでクリスタルが出来てつまりやすく尿管結石になる可能性があるそうです。外猫ちゃんはいつも見てあげられないので特にドライフードにはお水を足すなどして気をつけましょう）。   もしウエットフードにお湯を少し加えても便秘が改善しなければ是非以下の方法で試してみてください。 １）通常食べているフードにお湯を少し注いでぴちゃぴちゃにします。 （慢性便秘の場合はごはんをいつもウエットフードにしましょう。そして人肌より暖かく。） ２）シリアム・ハスクスのパウダーをそのぴちゃぴちゃごはんに、スプーン小さじ弱ほど入れて ダマが全然なくなるようによく混ぜます。（カプセルの場合はカプセルを外して粉だけを使いましょう。そのままあげてはいけません。喉にひっかかると命取りになります! 通常飲み込むのに問題があるペットさんにはご使用をお避けください。） ファイバーが入りドロドロになりました。 ＊ドロドロのまま与えては喉にひっかかって大変危険です。 ＊シリアム・ハスクスのパッケージにも注意事項として書かれています。 （人間の場合はテーブルスプーンの摂取でコップ１杯の水を飲むよう指示されています。） ３）更に水とお湯を加えながら、暖かくなるように温度を調節。 そしてウエットフードがほとんど液体状のさらさらになるくらいに調節します。 （ネスタのごはんは、人参、いんげん、ズッキーニなどが入ったブランドですので、お野菜以外がさらさらとなります。） ４）馴れていない、またはあまりお腹がすいていないと食べないかもしれません。その場合、普段大好きなものを振りかけてあげましょう。味の濃いドライフードを少しだけ上にかけると喉が乾くので、食べやすくなります。粉にして振りかけてもよいでしょう。 そのように慣らしていきます。   ネスタ猫の場合は、１日２回の食事で夜はこのようなごはんを食べています。朝には快便です。みなさんもびっくりされるかもしれませんよ！ここでキャンベル先生に質問： シリアム・ハスクスを毎日ネスタに あげてすでに５年経ちましたが、この ままあげ続けて大丈夫でしょうか？ キャンベル先生のお答え： シリアム・ハスクスは全く副作用がありません。 ということだそうです。 人間でもファイバーを取りすぎると栄養吸収の阻害もありますので、なんでもほどほどにでしょう。繰り返しますが、くれぐれも水分を入れて、ドロドロにならないように。シリアム・ハスクスの量はあくまでもサラサラ度で判断してください。 一方、なんでも食べちゃうプランキー猫。シリアム・ハスクスにより、落としそうになった命を何度も拾います。次回Part2にて我らの蘇りを暴露。乞うご期待！   ＊当セクションでの情報は、かかりつけのお医者様の 医学的アドバイスにとってかわるものではありません。 当サイトの情報は読者の方々の責任に置いてご利用 ください。また、その結果につきましては、当サイト では一切の責任を負いかねますので、ご了承ください ませ。 Left photo by Minori Yoshida Home Saving lives with Psyllium Husks Psyllium Husks, an alternative treatment for constipation, has another function. In this section "Paws Did It Again", I am going to introduce success stories about how to handle pets' health problems and emergencies along with questions for our dear veterinarian doctor. First, please take a look at the list below. When they suffer from the following symptoms, please contact your veterinarian doctor immediately and ask for the advice or you may take your pets to the emergency hospital right away. <Species Specific Emergencies> * Dog with a suddenly bloated abdomen * Male cat straining to urinate * Rabbit who hasn't eaten in 24 hours <General Emergencies> * Excessive bleeding * Ingestion of poison * Trouble breathing * Hit by car or fell out of window * Sudden collapse * Seizure * Giving birth and in trouble (Courtesy of Symphony Veterinary Center) Please keep the emergency phone numbers of your veterinarian somewhere easily accessible. It is also good idea to make a plan for transportation to the animal hospital. Now for the main issue. At my home, there is one cat with awful bad eating habit. His name is Plankey. Around the time he was 5 month old, Plankey was making frequent appearances in the back of my apartment building. He seemed to be a stray. His head was large while his body was extremely small like a tadpole. Though he did not seem on the verge of a transformation, like a frog he was not wearing a collar. He was alone and hungry. One day, when the fall winds were blowing in the transition to winter, I gave some food to him. After he ate, he looked like he was about to disappear but kept looking back at me. Finally he decided to come back to me slowly and took a lick of water from the cup I was holding. He sat down in the middle of my cross-legged mantra. He was so cute that I had to give a kiss on top of his big head. At the right moment, not sure if he completely trusted me, I picked him up. He said "Myaaaw", but wasn’t putting up any resistance, so I took him home just like that. At the time, there was already a cat and dog, along with two people, that called my apartment their home. All seemed well as Plankey joined the family with no problem. This is how the story unfolds ... about the tumult that ensued, and what I learned from it. About how he raised and trained me, rather than the other way around. (When we take a stray cat to the home where other animals are already living, the cat must be kept in the separated room or area until the test results of communicable diseases come in. Even on top of the head, the kissing was a big no.) Although he created a series of thrillingly perilous occasions after settling in at our home, fortunately we already had a super woman of the animal medical world as our pets’ doctor. Dr. Rebecca Campbell was about to show her real miracle powers ... with Plankey. This is the photo of Dr. Campbell. Not only a beautiful and smart lady, but also very compassionate. Her wonderful talent is also directed toward people. By e-mails, she replies to clients’ questions, and especially amazingly to my detailed questions expressed in poor English - written in a frantic ‘huff-puff mode’. Her unerring judgment and humor relax me, even make me come back to normal respiratory mode. When we heard that she didn't frighten the most frightened bunny who our friends brought in, we decided to take our pets to her clinic, too.Dr. Campbell is a head doctor and the owner of Symphony Veterinary Center. She did her undergraduate work at Harvard University, studied at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, and did her postdoctoral internship at the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked in Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Manhattan before opening SVC in 2000. She is a member of the House Rabbit Society, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. First, our 11-year-old male cat. His name is Nesta. At that time, five years ago, Nesta was in awful condition. Due to his diabetes he was getting two insulin shots per day, had high enzymes in his liver and kidney (malfunction), persistent constipation, hyperthyroidism, and cancer cells,.. all together. Now those symptoms have been conquered, and 16-year-old Nesta plays, sleeps, and eats well. Mainly sleeps. The recovery was made possible with medicine, supplements and food. Psyllium Husks, recommended by Dr. Campbell, miraculously solved Nesta's persistent constipation. And Psyllium Husks saved Plankey's life many times.When we brought Nesta in to Dr. Campbell's office, after considering his liver malfunction, she decided to switch the chemical medicine that Nesta had been taking for a half year to a natural supplement for his constipation. I buy it here at the price of $14.99 + tax. 68 tablespoon doses in a bottle. It lasts more than 4 months for Nesta when using a small teaspoon once per day. Constipation is an enemy to the health of each internal organ. Constipation may have various causes. In Nesta’s case it is old age and weak intestines. It could also be a result of not enough water intake after eating dry food (Please pull up the skin of his or her back. If it does not come right back, it means the body is dehydrated), or intestinal diseases, injuries from an accident, or a neurological problem (in that case, please ask your doctor for the advice). If your pet is suffering from constipation, then first try adding warm water to their wet food. (Male cats on a dry food diet are more at risk of developing crystals in their urinary tract. For outside male cats, we can't watch their conditions all the time, so even more reason to avoid dry food or at least make sure clean water is available. ) If you give your pets wet food with warm water and it still does not work then please try the following. 1) Begin again by warming up your pet’s food by adding a small amount of hot water to the wet food. 2) Then add less than a teaspoonful of psyllium husks powder and stir until the powder is all dissolved. (If the product is contained in a capsule then, with your hands, pull the capsule apart and empty it’s contents. Be sure to throw away the capsule, it could be fatal if caught in your pet’s throat. Do not take this product when they have difficulty in swallowing). Now the fiber in the food has made it pulpy. * But please do not serve your pet this pulpy mix because it’s a major risk to get caught in the throat and that's very dangerous! (The package of Psyllium Husks has warning: Mix this product with at least 8 oz / a full glass of liquid. Taking this product without enough liquid may cause choking. Do not take this product if you have difficulty in swallowing.) 3) In order to completely dissolve the Psyllium Husk fibers add more water (or hot water, to maintain a warm temperature) until the wet food mix becomes very liquid. (Nesta's food has vegetables such as carrots, string beans, and zucchini so except the vegetables it is all liquid.) 4) Your pets may not eat the food since he or she is not used to it. In that case, you could sprinkle on a bit of their favorite treat, or grinded dry food. Nesta has two meals per day and here he is eating his second, a more liquidy mix of fiber and food at night. Next morning, he goes to the bathroom with huge victory! I am sure you will be thrilled, too! Now here is the question to Dr. Campbell: Nesta has been taking Psyllium Husks in his evening meal every day for five years. Is there any thing to worry about if I keep adding Psyllium Husks in his food? The answer from Dr. Campbell: There is no side effect in Psyllium Husks. Just know that too much fiber prevents the nutrition absorption, so modest use is the best. It’s worth repeating; please make the food very liquid, not pulpy. I am not forgetting about Plankey, the will-eat-anything cat. With Psyllium Husks, Plankey grabbed back the life that he almost lost many times. All will be exposed in the next episode.
