 ☆☆☆☆☆ New ６月１３日 ヘルプアニマルズさんが野生動物のページを更新。膨大な野生動物が「駆除」や「学術」のもとに殺されており、現在発表されているそれら動物の数を調べあげ、独自にまとめていらっしゃいます。 これらは恐るべき数でした。平成１８年、日本では犬や猫を含む約２３万頭の野生動物、６０万頭の鳥類が狩猟・有害鳥獣駆除されたそうです。世界においても、多くの野生動物が殺され続けています。ヘルプアニマルズさんではまた、動物を傷つけずに農作物を守る方法など、是非トライして頂きたい成功例を紹介されています。日本がホスト、１９２カ国とEUが参加し、生物多様性について話し合うCOP10（生物多様性条約第１０回締約国会議）まであと３ヶ月半。非常にタイムリーな情報で、 必見です！  ４月２１日、セシオン杉並で行われたEarth Day ４０周年記念イベント「NYからあしたへの選択・・・動物保護・エコロジーから生物多様性を考える」では、平日にも関わらず沢山の方々にお越し頂きました。ありがとうございました！
各界で平素より平和な世界へ向けてメッセージを発し努力されている方々から、学ぶことも多いイベントでした。心より感謝申し上げます。 動物たちの窮状を見ても明らかな、地球の危機。わたしたちが動物を消費しない生活を選ぶことは、自分が気持ち良いだけでなく、地球にも必要だということがわかってきました。 人間の歴史で、わたしたちの生の営みと暴力は一緒に培かわれてきたかもしれません。しかし、その暴力について判断することも、生の発展でもあると思います。 動物たちがいなくなるということが悲しい、という感覚さえ退化してゆく前に、動物たち、自然とハッピーに共存するために、人間の能力を使うことがどれほど素晴らしいか、皆で経験していける時代になることを願っています。 「Green」では日本も関わりの深いパームオイル・プランテーションとオランウータンの絶滅について淡々と描いています。スーパーマーケットにて包装してある製品の半分にはパームオイルが含まれていると言われています。またサステイナブルであると証明されたパームオイルの１％しか世界で使われていないそうです。この映画を見ると、私たちが普段消費しているパームオイルと自然破壊や動物の絶滅がどのようにつながっているか容易に理解することが出来ます。 わたしたちに出来ることとして、どこでどのように品物が製造されたかを明記してもらうトレーサビリティーを製造者／販売者へ消費者として働きかけていく必要があるようです。 しかし、乱開発によって不毛となってしまった土地をもとの森に戻し、現地の方々の伝統と生活を守りながら、野生動物の保全をしていくことは極めて難しいように思えていました。されど、驚異的な成功例がボルネオにあったのです。 ぜひこちらのビデオをご覧ください。 ウィリー・スミッツの熱帯雨林再生計画 （日本語字幕版） http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/ Samboja Lestari Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 インドネシア、ボルネオの南東部に位置するSamboja Lestariという場所は、１９０３年にアブラヤシの生産性の高さが発見されて以来、熱帯森林が伐採され、１９８０年代には虫の声さえ聞こえない生物の存在しない不毛な土地となってしまいました。 そこに目を向けたのが、オランウータンの保護団体 ボルネオ・オランウータン・サバイバル・ファウンデーション(BOS Japan)を設立し１９９０年代から現地で活動していたウィリー・スミッツ博士です。博士はボルネオに来て、各村々をたずね、オランウータンの悲惨な状況を目の当たりにしました。無惨な姿のオランウータンたちを見て、はじめは村人に対して非常な怒りを向け、殺さないでほしいとたのみました。しかし村人たちにとって、オランウータンは作物を荒らす害獣であり、食肉になったり、ペットとしてとらえたり、と守るものではなく使うものでした。そしてそういった村人に、オランウータンが森林に与える素晴らしい影響や、森林がどのように村人にも大切かなどを問いて歩きましたが、ある村人は理解し、ある村人は怒りました。スミッツ博士の家は焼かれ、飼っていた犬も殺されてしまい、保護政策による進展があまり見えませんでした。そんなところに思いたったのが、さきほどのSamboja Lestariという2千ヘクタールの不毛地帯ー再生。その不毛地帯を、次から次へと焼けだされてくるオランウータンたちのためのコンサベーションエリアにし、かつ現地の人の生活、環境、まわりの自然も再生させる一大プロジェクトを立ち上げたのでした。 Samboja Lestari は２００５年にそのプロジェクトが立ち上がるまで、Borneo East Kalimantan地区では最貧の地域、人口の５０％は失業者で、非常に高い犯罪率になっていました。収入の２２％は水を買うことに費やされており、乱獲のあとに不毛となった土地はアランアランという青酸を出す雑草に覆われていました。気候変動は激しく、厳しい干ばつ、年に５〜６回の洪水などにも見舞われていました。 そして、このプロジェクトを起こすことによって、４年後には３０００人分の仕事をつくり、気候が大きく変わり、４０万人分の飲み水をつくりだしました。（BalikpapanというSambojaに近い５０万人の都市は５０％の人口しか水道へのアクセスがありません。） オランウータウンはもちろん、野生の状態で生きる場所を与えられ、子供のときにレスキューされたオランウータンはリハビリセンターや森での生活を習う学校に通います。人間は自分の家を持ち、農作物やサステイナブルなバイオ燃料で収入を得ることが出来ます。 ２００２年から１０００本の木を毎日植えました。 ２００８年には１２１８種の木 （そのうち数十種はオラウータウンに排泄されることによって芽を出す種から育ちます。）１３７種の鳥類、摂氏３−５度低い気温、湿度は１０％上昇したのです。 このSambojaの緻密な方法は、他の砂漠化した場所にも適用できる可能性が非常に高いのです。 以下は参考にさせて頂きました資料の一部です。 ＊ 生物多様性を守るパームオイルの利用はわずか１％ ～WWF、企業に需要を喚起～ ＊ PHPサイエンス・ワールド新書）という著書を頂きました。日本の里山を回復していくことが野生動物の保全につながるとあり、ワイルドライフマネージメントについての詳細が書かれています。素晴らしいご本でした。（ありがとうございました！） 「Glass Walls」は、もし工場式畜産農場の壁がガラスで出来ていたら多くの人がベジタリアンになるでしょう、というメッセージです。また、ベジタリアンであるということが、どのように地球とわたしたちの健康に大きな利益をもたらすかということもわかりやすく説明しています。 ポール・マッカートニー氏のメッセージを生馬アイザックさんが日本語でナレーションしてくださいました。生馬さんはニューヨークでアナウンサー、スポーツ・ジャーナリスト、また役者さんとして活躍されています。マッカートニーさんのメッセージが伝わるように何度も練習して本番の録音に臨んでくださいました。翻訳はユウコ・ナガシマ・イングリスさんが担当。ユウコさんは食育について考えていらっしゃる学校の先生です。 「Glass Walls日本語ナレーション版」、沢山の方々にご覧頂ければ幸いです。  生馬アイザックさん 「Ｍidway Message from Gyre」は写真家クリス・ジョーダン氏による「ミッドウェイ諸島 渦からのメッセージ」です。 クリス・ジョーダン氏はこのように記しています。 これらアホウドリのひなの写真は、２００９年９月に、北太平洋の真ん中に位置するミッドウェイ諸島の砂と珊瑚で出来た細長く伸びた場所で撮影しました。巣立ち前のヒナたちの親は、汚染された海洋を広く飛び回り、食べ物のように見えるものを運び帰って子供たちに食べさせます。人間のゴミを食べ物とすることで、毎年何十万ものミッドウェイ諸島のアホウドリのヒナたちが、飢餓、毒素、そしてそれら人間のゴミを喉につかえさせて、亡くなります。 この現象を出来るだけ誠実に記録するために、すべての写真中のプラスチックは、動かしたり、入れ替えたり、操作したり、調節したりなど一切していません。この映像は、一番近い大陸でも２０００マイルも離れた、世界で最も僻地である海洋の地域に生息するヒナたちの、実際の胃の内容物を見せています。 ＊ 渦の動きです。by Greenpeace 「Overfishing」は、「漁業による乱獲」について端的に海洋の状況を伝えるメッセージフィルムです。 フィルムのメッセージ和訳です： 1 ポンド（0.45 kg) の魚介類が市場に出る場合、１０ポンド、あるいは１００ポンドの魚介が、バイキャッチと言われる混獲として、海に投げ捨てられます。 まぐろやメカジキやサメなどの補食大型魚の９０％が姿を消しました。 大型鯨類の９０％が、そして小型鯨類の６０％も沿岸や河口から、姿を消しました。 一億頭のサメが毎年殺されます。 １０万羽のアホウドリが毎年殺されます。 これらはすべて漁業によります。 カナダのドールハウシー大学の研究によれば、今日漁獲されている全ての種が２０４８年までに絶滅すると発表しました。それは３８年以内に起こるということです。 たとえば、ほんのたまにサケのお寿司や、鉄火巻きや、ハタの塩焼きや、チリ産のシーバスを楽しむ人のことは別にして、なぜ人類はこれらの種が絶滅することを考慮する必要があるのでしょうか？なぜなら私たちは何万年もかけて進化してきた食物連鎖を破壊しているからです。中型の魚を食べる大型魚がいなくなります。すると小魚を食べる中型魚が増えすぎます。そして小魚が消滅します。最も小さい有機体であるプランクトンや藻で出来たどろどろの海洋になります。このようなデッドゾーンと言われる場所が出現しはじめます。赤潮が増え、クラゲが増えます。それら小さい有機体が死んで海の底に沈むと水に溶けている酸素を消耗しながら腐敗していきます。誰も何も、このような酸素欠乏地域に住むことは出来ません、バクテリア以外は。このようにして私たちは複雑で高度な何十万年もかけて進化して来た生物を最も基本的な単純なものと取り替えようとしています。これは進化において賢明な生物戦略とは言えないでしょう。 これらの映像作品は見るのが非常につらいものでしたが、これが地球の現状で、そこからどのように地球の再生に向けていくか、会場にいらして頂いた皆さんと気持ちを共有出来たことが嬉しかったです。日本の動物事情などまた皆さまからお伺いしました。本当にありがとうございました。 ◆◇「アカデミー賞候補映画“The Cove”自主上映会」◇◆

1960年代、リチャード・オバリーはイルカ調教の世界的権威として、人気テレビ番組「Flipper」の撮影に関わっていた。来る日も来る日も芸をするイルカを、聴衆は微笑ましく見ていた。しかし、ある時それらすべてが、悲劇を迎えることになる。
～水族館のイルカ、どこから来たか知っていますか？～
日本外国特派員協会で行われた福島瑞穂消費者・少子化担当相の記者会見報告 日本外国特派員協会は１１月１１日（水）、日本の政治家、福島瑞穂 新内閣府特命担当大臣（消費者及び食品安全・少子化対策・男女共同参画担当）を招き記者会見を行った。国内外の主要紙及び主要放送メディアが福島大臣の新職務について質問をした。その中で調査報道のレポーターであるボイド・ハーネル氏は、毒性が強く水銀汚染されているイルカ肉が日本の特定小売店向けに継続的に販売されており、それにまつわる深刻な健康問題があることについてインタビューを行った。
ハーネル氏は福島大臣に、厚生省は小型鯨類肉に警告表示の義務づけを怠っているだけでなく、更に日本全国でイルカ肉が鯨肉として不正表示されていると述べた。また、二人の太地町議員が氏に語ったことを伝えた。二人の太地町議員は太地町で捕獲されたイルカ肉を認定実験施設で検査したところ水銀及びメチル水銀が非常に高濃度であることを発見し、イルカ肉が毒性廃棄物であるとして非難しており、過去に太地町で鯨が学校給食で供されていたと語ったことも福島大臣に伝えた。 また日本のトップ医療研究者である浴野 成生（えきの しげお）博士と遠藤哲也（えんどう てつや）博士もイルカ肉を食用として販売していることを非難していると伝えた。更に、５０人の太地町住人が水銀汚染テストを受け、その毒性物資のレベルが全国平均値の１０倍であったとことにも言及した。ジャパン・タイムズの寄稿特派員はイルカ肉の水銀値が衝撃的なレベルであったことを示す１０サンプルの認定実験報告書、及びEIA （Environmental Investigation Agency: 環境調査機関）、日本消費者連盟、エルザ自然保護の会による詳細研究結果、また日本の消費者に食品として販売されている日本近海のイルカ肉に様々な毒性物質が発見されたことを詳述する科学報告書も福島大臣に提出した。 ハーネル氏は大臣にイルカ肉を永久に販売禁止とするか尋ねた。大臣は日本のイルカが高濃度の水銀で汚染されていることを認識しており、この問題に今後取り組み、科学者や環境保護団体による研究を調査するつもりだと述べた。 ＊ ボイド・ハーネル氏は主にジャパン・タイムズで記事を発表しており、２００６年と２００８年に米国ヒューメーン・ソサエティーのジェネシス賞を受賞、国際的に高く評価されている 日本在住のジャーナリスト。 こちらはボイド氏がイタリアのSky-TVに答えたインタビュー映像 (英語のみ)です。
１１月１６日の夜から１７日の朝にかけて、日本でイルカ猟と水銀の問題をジャパンタイムズで報道されていらっしゃるボイド・ハーネル氏と１時間ほどお話ししました。 会話の中で一番重要な部分をご紹介致します。（by 水口／CFT) 2009年11月18日 「イルカの水銀テストは過去に何度も行われていますが、どれも非常に水銀汚染が激しく、最も高いものは日本政府の水銀暫定基準の５０００倍もありました。想像してみてください。過去２０年間で４０万頭のイルカが殺され、肉として流通したのです。その肉が食品であれ、ペットフードであれ、充填剤として使われようと、廃棄されようと、その水銀と他の毒性物質は国中の環境に散らばりどこにも消えず蓄積されているのです。研究によると、水銀は子どもでは自閉症やアスペルガー症候群を引き起こす恐れがあり、テストステロンを増加させ（攻撃性も増加します）動脈硬化、免疫抑制、高血圧、水俣病のような中枢神経破壊が起こります。」 私たちは自分がイルカを食べなければ問題がないと思うかもしれません。でも事実はそうではないのです。４０万頭のイルカ肉の水銀と毒性物質はどこにも消えず、国中に蓄積されています。そして今でも８道県（北海道、青森、岩手、宮城、千葉、静岡、和歌山、沖縄）のどこかでイルカは捕獲され肉が流通し、子どもや妊婦さんが食べ、学校や病院で出されても法的に問題ないとされているのです。この重篤な環境汚染はわたしたちの健康を害していることになります。 毎月1度動物の権利・動物の福祉について討論会を行っている 『討論！雑談！交流会』についてのお知らせです。 弊ウエブサイトでも記事を提供してくださっているシャイロさんからのイベント情報です。 ◆場所 セシオン杉並

このコーナーでは随時、日本のイルカ猟の現況を現地からのレポートを中心にお伝えしていきます。東京国際映画際で「ザ・コーヴ」が上映されて以来、かつてないほどに、日本のイルカ猟が国内外で改めて話題を集めています。イルカの高水銀レベルの問題。また日本にとってはイルカ漁・捕鯨は伝統であり食文化である、という見解。そして反イルカ猟・捕鯨は日本バッシングである、という政治的、あるいは感情的な反応。そんな様々な意見がある中で、人間と同じように感情を持つ他の生き物たちをどれだけ理解し、いかに人間のためだけにその命を消費していく社会から持続可能な社会へ向けて変化を起こして行くか。また自然をこれ以上破壊せず、人間を含めたすべての生き物がどうすればこの地球上で各々の生命と共存してゆけるのか。人間だけの利益を考えた生き方が何を私たちにもたらして来たか。私たちひとりひとりが考える必要があるのではないでしょうか。 マゴンドウとはどんな生き物？
イルカとほとんど同じ体長で頭が丸くゴンドウイルカとも呼ばれています。体内に保有しているメチル水銀量は海洋哺乳生物最大とも言われますが日本ではクジラ肉として国内に流通されています。小型鯨類（イルカを含む）のため、IWCの管轄外とされており、WWFでは大型鯨類と同じように近年すべての小型捕鯨類が絶滅の危機にあるとしています。イルカ・鯨は日本の法律では鳥獣保護法の適用除外に指定されており、環境省ではなく農林水産省の管轄です。 ゴンドウクジラ属 (出典：ウィキペディア）ー マゴンドウはゴンドウクジラ属マイルカ科。ゴンドウクジラ属はイルカとして扱われる種が多くその形態は、口吻が額のメロンより先にあまり長く突出しておらず、いわゆるイルカらしい顔つきをしていない。そのため、体の大きさや系統分類学的位置からは十分イルカとして扱われておかしくないにもかかわらず、慣習的にイルカとしては扱われず、クジラとして扱われることが多い。ゴンドウイルカと呼ばれることもある。 ２００９年１０月２８日（水） 午後４時頃の電話での会話（日本時間）
先 週は１０～１５頭のマゴンドウが入り江に追い込まれ、すべて殺されました。そのとき私はあたりを散策し入り江が遠くに見える崖に立つことが出来ました。私が立っているところからは見えにくいところもありましたが、ボートがマゴンドウたちをより奥まった入り江に追い込んでいくのが見えました。マゴンドウたちが殺されているのを間近には見えませんでしたが、一頭のマゴンドウが最後まで闘ったのを見ました。漁師たちに殺されるまで１０分かかりました。３隻の小さな ボートがそのマゴンドウを追いかけまわしましたが、なかなか捕まえることができませんでした。マゴンドウはあらゆるところを泳ぎ回り、息をしばらくとめていまし た。（息をするためには海面に出てこないとなりません。）そのマゴンドウが海面に上がったときは、私が立っている場所からも息をするのが聞こえたほどです。そしてどんどん入り江の奥に追い込まれて見えないところに連れて行かれたとき、突然、「ザクッ」という音を聞きました。私はその奥まった入り江が見える崖に移動しようとしましたが、漁師たちに阻まれました。明らかに漁師たちはその血に染まった入り江を隠そうとしていました。 現地の人々は非常に警戒心を強めています。外国人を見ると自動的に「どうしてこの町にいるの？」というまなざしを反射的に投げかけます。 太地町の人たちとコミュニケーションを取るのは日本語が話せないので難しいです。まだたくさんのクジラ肉を売っているのかも把握していません。普通の太地町の人々はそういうことはないのですが、イルカ猟関係者は私を見ると鋭い視線を向けて来ます。マゴンドウたちが殺された朝、怒った漁師たちが私を追ってきました。コンパッションをなくしてしまった表情に恐怖と危険を感じました。 今、１５〜２０頭のマゴンドウが入り江にいます。その中に数頭のバンドウイルカも含まれているかもしれませんが、見た限りではすべてマゴンドウのようです。明日早朝にこれらのマゴンドウたちは殺されます。 ２００９年１０月２９日（木） 午後３時（日本時間）電話での会話
今朝入り江に行ったときにはすでに屠殺が終るところでした。私のいるところからは何も見えませんでしたが、２０人くらいの漁師が海に出ていました。（前回はもっと少ない漁師の人数で１０−１５頭を屠殺していたので、イルカまたはマゴンドウの数はもっと多いはずです。） --- --- --- --- ---

代々木公園で今月「東京ベジフードフェスタ2009」が開催 October 11, 2009 〜草の根から、文化の実りへ〜 毎年10月に代々木公園で行われているベジタリアン・イベント「東京ベジタリアン・フェスティバル」。日本でもここ数年ベジタリアンの方が増えてきましたね。毎年多くの人で賑わい、楽しみにされている方もいらっしゃると思います。今回で第7回目を迎えますが、前回までの「ベジタリアンフェスティバル」から装いも新たに「ベジフードフェスタ」と名前を変え、ベジフードに着目し、出展される食事も全てビーガンフードに限定されました。美味しくて、ヘルシーで、地球にも優しいベジフード。 実行委員長の長田裕貴さんにベジフードフェスタの趣旨やイベントへの意気込み、今後の展開などのお話を伺いました。 ◆ 「東京ベジフードフェスタ」の主旨をお話頂けますか？ 「一言で言えば、ベジの良さを多くの人に伝えたい、ベジを知らない人にはまずベジというもの自体をリアルにお伝えしたい、ということですね。それと同時に、このイベントの在り様によって、今後の社会の理想像を表現したいという気持ちもあります。それが今年のテーマの「草の根から文化の実りへ」に表れています。社会的弱者も強者も関係なく私たち全員、もっと広く言えば生きとし生けるもの全てとも言えるかもしれません、その私たちにとって『バリアフリー』で優しい社会・文化を作って行きたい、実らせていきたい、そういう思いをこめています。そこにはベジというものが不可欠だと思うんですね。」 ◆ この度フェスティバルのネーミングを「東京ベジフードフェスタ」に変更されましたが、その経緯をお話し頂けますか？ 「主旨のところで『ベジというもの自体をリアルにお伝えしたい』とお答えました。ベジの根底にあるであろう考え方や信条というものはそれに接していない人にはダイレクトに伝わりづらいですが、フードという「物」であれば、リアルにダイレクトに伝えられると考えました。また、フードという『物』に限定して焦点を当てることで、一人一人の方に自由に受けとって頂けるだけの幅広さや余裕を持たせられると考えました。そうすれば多くの方に無理なく興味を持って頂けると思ったんですね。皆様一人一人の考えや習慣を否定することなく、ただシンプルに「こんなに（いろんな意味で）オイシイものがあるんですよ」と、それだけ主張したかったということです。」 ◆また、前回までのフェスティバルから、内容など新しくされた部分があればお話し頂けますか？ 「今回一番変わったのは、先程のご質問にもありましたようにタイトルなのですが（笑）そのことによって、在り方もよりシンプルになったと言えると思います。何よりもまず美味しいフードを味わって頂き、更にそれと一緒に美味しい情報や美味しい出会いも味わって頂く、この狙いがハッキリした分、そのための環境作りの方法もハッキリしました。この環境作りが今回最も発展した部分だと思いますし、今後も継続的に発展させて行きたい部分です。具体的に言えば、提供する側にとっての提供しやすい設備、それから受け取る側にとっての受け取りやすい環境、この二つです。それから、今回初めてフードをビーガンで統一しました。 これは先程の、焦点をフードに『限定』することで『幅広さ』を持たせる、という一見パラドックスのような考え方と似ていますが、ビーガンに限定することで逆に様々なお客様が共にテーブルを囲める環境を作れるんですよね。 『バリアフリー』の社会を目指すためには、『最大公約数』による文化を築く必要があるということだと思います。「最大公約数」にすることは一見『制限』だけれども、実は違うんですよね。みんなが一緒にそこにいられる、そういう優しさを持てる社会・文化だと思います。」 ◆ 今回で７回目を迎えられるフェスティバルですが、この数年の間に見られた変化はどの様なことでしょうか？ 「代々木公園での開催は４回目の2006年からですが、このような内容のイベントを代々木公園という大きな場所で開催出来るようになったということだけでもとても社会の変化を感じますし、その後ありがたいことに順調に出展数も来場者数も増えていますので、それだけ関心を持たれている方が増えてきているということだと思います。また、世界各国での動きを見てみても、特に環境問題の視点からベジに関係する政策や研究が進んできていますよね。それもこの数年特に活発になったことだと思います。日本もその流れに遅れることなく進んで行きたいですよね。」 ◆フェスティバルとしての今後のビジョンをご説明頂けますか？ 「こういったイベントは、もちろんこちらのお伝えしたいことをお伝えする場でもあるのですが、 一方で、人と人とが繋がる場、企業やお店、様々な団体などが繋がる場でもあると思います。 ベジという軸の下で、様々な出会いやストーリーが生まれ、それがより良い社会の構築に繋がっていく、その流れの一つの源として貢献出来るようなイベントでありたいですね。 そのためにはやはり今回のタイトルでも示したような、良い意味での幅広さ、垣根の低さというものを維持し続ける必要がありますし、逆にその分私達スタッフはベジというものを突き詰めて勉強し続けなくてはいけないと思っています。」 取材 & 文 by シャイロ

This systematic deforestation is a leading cause of the extinction of the Orangutan. It is said that half of the wrapped food products that we see at supermarkets contain palm oil. And only 1% of proven sustainable palm oil is used in the world. When we see this film, we can easily understand how the destruction of nature and animal extinction are linked to deforestation and harvesting palm oil - a product that we knowingly (or unknowingly) consume on a daily basis. One important step we can take on the issue of using unsustainable resources that deplete forests and habitats is to understand the traceability of a product. As consumers, we can and must ask manufacturers and retailers to make sure that their products state clearly where and how they were produced so we can determine the impact. It is extremely challenging to protect wildlife and shared resources while rehabilitating forest ravaged by overexploitation as well as protecting the local communities and their traditions. But there is one successful example of meeting this challenge in Borneo. Please take a look at this video: Dr. Willie Smits restores a rainforest. http://www.ted.com/talks/willie_smits_restores_a_rainforest.html Samboja Lestari Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 Since the use of oil palm was discovered in 1903 - deforestation has taken a deadly toll. By the 1980's Samboja Lestari, a region in southeastern Borneo, Indonesia, had become a lifeless and barren expanse of land where one can no longer even hear the singing of insects. Founder of the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Dr. Willie Smits has worked in the field since 1990's, visiting local villages in Borneo. He was most importantly struck by the horrendous conditions and devastation of Orangutans. He initially felt resentment towards the villagers and asked them not to kill orangutans. Dr. Smits discovered that for the villagers, Orangutans were not animals worthy of protection but were considered mere vermin that damaged crops, or were a respurce for meat for humans, or to be caught as pets. Then Dr. Smits started explaining the villagers how beneficial Orangutans are for the forest, and how important the forests are for the people. Some villagers understood but some became upset. Dr. Smits's house was burned down, his dog was killed, and it seemed like there would be a long road to travel on developing a regional conservation policy. One crucial step was Dr. Smits's project which reforested 2000 hectares of previously barren and uninhabitable land in Samboja Lestari creating conservation areas for the Orangutans who previously were burnt, chased out or captured from their natural habitats. This had the dual effect of not only creating a place where the Orangutans could live in peace but also revitalized the cultural and economic life of the local people bringing them back in harmony with their environment and the surrounding nature. Before the project was launched in 2005 in Samboja Lestari, the local crime and poverty level was very high in Borneo's East Kalimantan and 50% of the population was unemployed. 22% of their income had to be spent for buying water. The barren land after exploitation of forestlands was covered with grass which produced cyanic acid called alang-alang. The climate change was intense, the drought was severe, and they suffered floods 5~6 times a year. The Samboja Lestari project created jobs for 3,000 people in 4 years. The climate also dramatically improved and it produced drinking water for 400,000 people. (For example, in the city with a population of 500,000 called Balikpapan near Samboja, only 50% of the population has access for running water.) Orangutans are now given the habitats where they can live in the wild and those who were rescued when they were little go to rehabilitation centers and learn how to survive in the forest. Many people now own their own home and can earn income from agricultural crops and sustainable biofuel. Since 2002 more than one thousand trees have been planted each day. By 2008 the area had 1,218 different types of trees (some of them rely on orangutans' excrement to grow) and 137 kinds of birds. The temperature also went down by 3 ~ 5 degrees C and humidity was elevated by 10%. This elaborate mechanism in Samboja has a great potential to be applied to other places that have turned into deserts. The book describes the restoration of Satoyama in Japan and its positive effects on the conservation of wildlife - it also gives detailed examples of wildlife management. An inspiring book. (Thank you very much!) Glass Walls, narrated by Paul McCartney delivers a message that many people would become vegetarian if the walls of factory farms were transparent (as with glass). The video also explains how becoming a vegetarian significantly benefits both the Earth and our health. Mr. Ikuma Isaac kindly dubbed the voiceover of Paul McCartney's narration in the video in Japanese. Mr. Isaac is active as an announcer, sports journalist, and actor in New York City. He prepared well in advance before the recording to make sure that the message by Mr. McCartney would be effectively conveyed. The narration was translated into Japanese by Ms. Yuko Nagashima Inglis, a teacher who focuses on dietary education. Mr. Ikuma Isaac Midway Message From Gyre was a group of images shot by the photographer Chris Jordan.The following is a message from Mr. Jordan: "These photographs of albatross chicks were made in September 2009, on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking. To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. Sunday, January 31st, 2010 Report on FCCJ press conference with Japan's Food Safety Minister, Mizuho Fukushima The Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan (FCCJ) held a press conference Wednesday, November 11, to welcome Japanese politician Mizuho Fukishima, the new minister of food safety and general affairs, social affairs, and gender equality. Mainstream Japanese and foreign journalists with the print and broadcast media fielded questions related to her new position, including an interview by investigative reporter Boyd Harnell related to the serious health issues revolving around the ongoing sale of highly toxic, mercury-tainted dolphin meat at selected retail outlets in Japan. From the conversation with Mr. Boyd Harnell on November 16, 2009. November 18, 2009 by Masami Mizuguchi (CFT) I had the wonderful opportunity to speak by skype with Mr. Boyd Harnell yesterday. In our conversation, Mr. Harnell said, "The highest mercury level that was found in one of many tests on dolphin meat was 5,000 times higher than the interim standard of 0.4PPM. Please imagine. Over the last 20 years, 400,000 dolphins were killed and have been traded as meat consumption. Whether the meat has been consumed as food, pet food, food filler, or just been discarded as garbage, all the mercury and other toxic waste were scattered all over the country then accumulated, and will never be disappeared. Some studies even assert there is some risk that the mercury might trigger autism and Asperger syndrome in some children as well as to increase testosterone levels (and aggressiveness) also to damage central nerve system. As a consequence, it could cause arteriosclerosis, immune suppression, high-blood pressure, and Minamata Disease." We may think we won't be affected if we don't eat dolphins and whales. But that is simply not the case. The toxic waste from 400,000 dolphins (including pilot whales) have been contaminating the environment where we live. Yet dolphin hunting still occurs in 8 prefectures in Japan and the meat is sold legally. The government even permits schools and hospitals to serve the dolphin meat, risking health and safety of children and pregnant women. To this day, this critical environmental contamination continues to harm our health and the health of our children that come into contact with these foods tainted with mercury. Taiji Dolphin Drive
October 28th, 2009  We will continue to inform you on information related to dolphin hunting, focusing on updated reports from where the hunting is taking place. Since "The Cove" was screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival, dolphin hunting in Japan has been receiving tremendous attention, more than ever, both at home and overseas. There are many shades of opinions including: high mercury levels in dolphins, dolphin hunting as a Japanese tradition, the practice of eating dolphins as part of Japanese culture - as well as political and emotional reactions that criticize the advocacy against dolphin or whale hunting as "Japan-bashing". Above all these debates, it is very important to question ourselves: how much we are learning about other sentient beings, how we can create a paradigm shift - in a world that supports the consumption of fellow sentient beings - towards a society where we can live sustainably, as a shared-earth species, how we can co-exist without further destroying our environment. And importantly, our grasping the impact from this lifestyle that has selfishly benefitted only us humans. Don't we need to consider these questions very deeply? The following was reported, by an independent ‘observer’ October 28th, 2009: Conversation on the phone at 4pm (Japan Time)
"Last week there was a day when about 10-15 pilot whales were herded in the cove and were all killed. I was walking around, went out on the cliff overlooked. From where I was standing, it was difficult to see and the boats were trying to push the whales deeper into the cove. So I could not see well when the whales were being killed.
And there was one whale that I saw, at the end. It was a 'fighter' -- it took the fishermen 10 minutes to kill it. There were 3 little motor boats there and they could not catch it. The animal was swimming everywhere and holding its breath for awhile [staying submerged] -- they need to come to the surface of the water to breath. When it surfaced, I could hear its breath from where I was standing. It was pushed and cornered into the deeper cove where I could no longer see it. Then all of sudden, I heard a big sound like ‘zagg’ [sic]. I was trying to go out to the cliff but the fishermen were blocking my view -- obviously they were trying to hide all the blood in the cove.
Atmosphere in Taiji village: People are very guarded. Any foreigners in town – and people automatically react like with a "why-are-you-here?" - kind of look. I thought there would be many media or advocates here but, actually, there have been none since I came here. I'm alone (to check the situation) - which I was not expecting. Communication with the people of Taiji is difficult as I don't speak Japanese, and so I can't tell if they still sell any whale meat. People in general, in the village, don’t, but people who are involved to in the dolphin hunting give me the razor-beam stare. The morning when the pilot whales were killed, the angry fishermen were following me. It was scary because you see their faces have lost compassion.
I videotaped and photographed as much as possible even from a far distance. The fishermen were surrounding me but didn't physically try to stop me.
Right now, 15 - 20 pilot whales are in the cove. There might be a few bottlenose dolphins but it seemed like they are all pilot whales. Those pilot whales will be killed tomorrow at dawn."
October 29th, 2009: Conversation on the phone at 3pm (Japan Time)
"By the time I went to the cove in the early morning, the slaughter was already close to the end. I couldn't see anything from where I was but there were about 20 fishermen there. (As there were much fewer fishermen to kill 15-20 pilot whales last time, so there must have been more dolphins or pilot whales this time.)
From up on the cliff where I could see the cove, there were fishermen guarding and blocking. That's the cliff where there are barbwires and today they put more barbwires. When I went there today; I got tangled with my foot and shoe. They have now tied the barbwires on the trees so if people walk fast, they could cut their neck. It's very dangerous place.
This afternoon, I went to the cove and it was empty. I was looking out the shore and I saw this thing sticking out the water. I thought it was a baby pilot whale. As I got closer, it turned out that it's just a very sharp rock. It's so heart breaking. I'm leaving this town and going home tomorrow. It's very quiet today. But it makes me wonder what's going to happen tomorrow. Or the next day. I wish I could just end this cruel hunting.” --- --- --- --- ---

"VegefoodFesta" in Tokyo is coming up on October 17 and 18
October 11, 2009 "VegefoodFesta" is an annual event held at Yoyogi Park since 2003. It is one of the largest vegetarian festivals in Japan. The VFF features a wide variety of vegetarian food, and hosts 100 vendors and exhibitors, including vegetarian, macrobiotic and raw food restaurants, selected organic vegetable vendors and shops handling organic goods. According to EDF (Environmental Defense Fund), "If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains, for example, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads." The first Vegan Film Festival in Japan ! "Vegan Film Festival 2009" will be held in Kyoto The very first vegan film festival in Japan, "Vegan Film Festival 2009", will be held on July 19th in Kyoto. Three important films will be shown including "Devour the Earth" (narrated by Paul McCartney) which has been screened for over a decade as the leading short documentay for people to learn about veganism or vegetarianism. The California Senate, by a vote of 27-12, approved a bill to ban the painful mutilation procedure of tail docking of dairy cattle—and that’s especially significant because California is the largest dairy state in the nation, with 1.8 million of the nation’s 9 million dairy cows. And the California Assembly passed A.B. 1437, a bill to ban the sale of eggs from battery cage operations, for both humane and health reasons. Both bills have a ways to go, needing approval by the other legislative chamber and then the governor, but these are exciting advances. ＜Postscript by CFT> Hello.
